Visual Likeness

Art reflects life, the eye recreates what it finds pleasing.

On the left are photographs of the sidewalk ice formations and on the right are the rust panels.  It was not our intention to directly copy the photographs , but after making 75 panels, the inspirational imagery is strikingly similar.

The custom panels are signed, sealed, and delivered. We decided to make 2 pairs and give the client the final choice. Each pair measures 30" wide x 48" tall.

Which one would you choose?

If you'd like to see a Terra Ferma panel up close and in person, check out the show at MCAD this week for the Work at MCAD: double shifts show, #44 is displayed on the second floor for another week. There is also a little panel in the MIA 'foot in the door 4' show.

Find it if you can among the thousands of entries.

Thank you

Thank you to everyone that came out to the St Paul Art Crawl and shared their comments about our work.  It was fun to hear so many insightful reactions from such a wide audience.

We loved seeing people get really close to the work to see 'what is that?'.

That, is a rust 'painting'.  A wood panel covered with iron pigment and painted with a brine solution resulting in a painting of rust and salt crystals.

Through experience we are able to control about 80% of the outcome of the painting.   We layer different concentrations of brine solution and let them evaporate.  Depending on humidity levels and salt type, different crystals are formed.  Part of the magic is responding to the surprises that happen when saltwater and iron react.

Right now we are working on some larger size panels.  Stay tuned for more updates.
